Music production for Night of the Meteor

Night of the Meteor is a long-running fan remake of Maniac Mansion. The community has collaborated before on graphics and animation, but not on music in the same structured way. These tutorials exist so outside composers can understand how to work on the score: tools, deliverables, and the path from idea to something the team can actually put in the game.

Work in progress: This site is still being shaped. Some pages are only stubs, while others currently go into more detail than the final version probably should. Treat the docs as the current working guide, not a finished handbook.

Want to contribute?

You can

  • Propose original music or arrangements that fit the project’s direction.
  • Work in your own DAW as long as you can meet the file and naming expectations the pipeline needs.
  • Iterate with feedback from the music lead (and the wider team when relevant).

You should not assume

  • That every idea ships unchanged—adventure games need music that fits scenes, pacing, and technical limits.
  • That the game repo is public in the same place as this documentation; handoff details are described in Production pipeline.

Musical direction still sits with the project’s music lead and core developer team. These docs describe process and technical handoff, not a free-for-all replacement of creative leadership.

How to get involved

  1. Read Technical setup and Alternatives so you know what workflow is supported.
  2. Use Downloads & links to install the tools you need.
  3. Read File formats & specs so exports are usable on first try.
  4. Read Cutscene and cue file naming so filenames match the pipeline.
  5. Follow Production pipeline for how to share WIPs, receive notes, and submit finals.
  6. Use the Glossary if SCUMM-era or game-audio terms are unfamiliar.
  7. Reach out in the official community forums (MMM community forum + Night of the Meteor boards) to align your idea with the team.

Ideas from the writing process can be posted and discussed in the relevant Night of the Meteor / Maniac Mansion Mania forum threads linked below.

These are the main public entry points for project news and community discussion. If additional contact channels such as Discord or email are relevant, link them from the official project or forum announcement rather than treating this repo as the source of truth.

Join the community

If you want to contribute music, start the conversation in the community forums:

  • Use the Maniac Mansion Mania community forum for public discussion and onboarding.
  • Use the Night of the Meteor forum boards (German/English) for project-specific exchange.

The best next step is a short post with your idea, intended in-game use, and a rough demo link.
